About the event
Detroit, Michigan – On Friday, June 19, 2020, the LIVE FREE Detroit Coalition along with several partners will organize a Juneteenth March for Judicial Reform from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM in downtown Detroit. The protest begins at the Coleman A. Young Municipal Building (2 Woodward Avenue), with a direct route to Frank Murphy Hall of Justice (1441 St. Antoine), the 36th District Court located at 421 Madison street, and back to Spirit of Detroit Plaza. The protest centers around three key components in our ask for judicial reform:
- Lack of Jury diversity, which is a national problem according to the American Bar Association even more so in Wayne County, the most segregated county in America.
- Sentencing Guidelines Reform, African-American adults are 5.9x as likely to be incarcerated than white counterparts, and Hispanics are 3.1x as likely. According to a report by, The Sentencing Project.
- Michigan Supreme Court Representation, currently is at 0 (zero) for African American and minority representation.
